Citizens Theatre Glasgow - Major Refurbishment Project

The Citizens Theatre in Glasgow has recently undergone a significant and transformative refurbishment, marking a new chapter in its rich history. Originally constructed in 1878 as Her Majesty’s Theatre and Royal Opera House, the venue is designed by prominent architect James Sellars. This historic theatre, renowned for its cultural significance, has been carefully upgraded to meet modern needs while preserving its Victorian charm. The Citizens Theatre remains a cornerstone of Glasgow’s artistic community, known for its innovative productions and commitment to accessibility and education.

Key Features of the Refurbishment

The ambitious redevelopment, first announced several years ago, opens in the summer of 2025. The extensive works enhance both the theatre’s functionality and visitor experience. Key improvements include restoring the stunning original Victorian auditorium. This meticulous process has ensured the theatre’s architectural splendour remains intact while showcasing its rich history. Expert craftsmanship was employed to restore ornate plasterwork & decorative detailing preserving the venue’s period character.

New upgraded communal areas have been introduced to provide comfortable and inviting environments for audiences to gather before and after performances.

Enhanced facilities now include participation spaces and a dedicated studio theatre that supports creative development and community engagement. These spaces are equipped with state-of-the-art lighting, sound, and multimedia facilities to foster innovation in theatrical performance and education.

Backstage improvements have provided upgraded facilities for performers, improved artist accommodation, and enhanced technical infrastructure.

New Spaces and Technology

The refurbished Citizens Theatre now features enhanced performance and multi-purpose spaces designed to support a diverse range of events and creative activities. The upgraded main theatre is equipped with advanced technical systems to support large-scale productions. The newly improved studio theatre offers flexible staging options for smaller performances, workshops, and experimental productions. Versatile event and learning spaces have also been introduced, providing adaptable environments for educational programs, community engagement, and private events.

Specialist Engineering, Lighting, and Audio Systems

To deliver a seamless and dynamic technical experience, the refurbishment introduces cutting-edge systems. The theatre now boasts over 400 channels of ETC dimmers, a comprehensive ETC Paradigm control system, and state-of-the-art ETC lighting desks, ensuring precise and high-performance stage lighting. More than 500 LED house light fittings have been installed throughout the building, enhancing visibility while reducing energy consumption.

A DMX system has been integrated to enable flexible and precise lighting control across all performance spaces. This sophisticated system supports seamless integration of lighting effects, remote programming capabilities, and enhanced creative flexibility for designers. All lighting bars, facility panels, and production lighting boxes were designed and manufactured by Doughty Engineering, ensuring robust and tailored infrastructure that complements the theatre’s unique layout and architecture.

A sophisticated QSYS paging system now ensures clear and consistent building-wide audio communication throughout public spaces, backstage areas, and performance zones. This system also integrates with the fire alarm for improved emergency response and safety.

The venue benefits from a powerful and immersive EM Acoustics audio system, designed to deliver exceptional sound clarity across both the main theatre and studio theatre. Strategically positioned for optimal coverage, the system ensures a rich and immersive audio experience for all audiences.

Cabling and Technical Infrastructure

The scale of the refurbishment involved significant upgrades to the venue’s technical backbone. Over 200 kilometres of cabling have been installed to power the upgraded electrical, lighting, and audio systems. Completing this extensive transformation required over 5,000 man-hours of technicians & engineers working to ensure the seamless integration of new systems within the historic building structure.

With its rich history now enhanced by state-of-the-art facilities, improved accessibility, and a commitment to environmental sustainability, the Citizens Theatre continues to inspire audiences for generations to come.
